I turn the radar on, on my phone set the alerts up. Then I drive and gage the situation as it unfolds. Weather forecast are often wrong about times and locations. You will not know intel you get there and can see for your self if you should drive or not. Also sometimes the storms can out run you, Or run you down. I have seen these storms with ground speeds of 70 + mph. Sometimes you will need a driver different route. As in all situations use your best judgement.
Great advice. This is also one of those situations where a cb with weather band alerts comes in handy. You'll not only get weather warnings but info from other drivers as it relays from driver to driver.
It comes down to gut judgement... What is your gut telling you.... Do you feel safe? if not, then pull off and either wait it out or check the news for the area and get an idea just how bad it is...
When it comes to wind, anything over 50mph gusts and I will park it. below that is a wait and see whats its like. If I can't keep control of truck or trailer, then its time to get off before something happens.
I always have my phone set for weather alearts. I also have local 511 websites pulled up if I need, or the local 511 phone numbers.. Every state has a 511 website for weather info as with phone systems. All automated and updated pretty frequently.
I was stuck last winter in Wyoming do to wind.. 65+ winds and snow blowing going over Larime to Cheyenne. Sat for 4 days do to the wind.. I only had 14k lbs in my trailer and would have rolled it before I got over.. glad I did as there was a massive wreck do to drivers thinking they could do anything...
When it comes to weather, if you feel unsafe, then pull off. Most companies will understand. Just check in from time to time with updates so they know your still alive.......

Something else to keep in mind is your trip planning. You know where you're going and you know what your route is going to be. A quick check of the NOAA website will give you forecast projections for the entire country. It's getting to be tornado season and those storms can come up out of nowhere but there are still tell tale signs of impending weather. They can't predict tornados like hurricanes or snowstorms because they're so random and develop so quickly but they do know what they're looking for in advance and a couple minutes of your time can prepare you for potentially hazardous weather.
Sweet, thanks guys.

What do you do when you know a severe storm is coming? For example, if I am going from Kentucky to Kansas and there is a line of storms with tornado warnings and high winds coming what is the procedure?
