I have worked as a Chef/cook for 27 years. In 2005 I went to Cdl school and worked for Stevens Transport and then Cooke Trucking out of Mt. airy NC. Not a bad company to drive for..teams only. Furniture etc to west coast return with produce. Anyone who lives within 3 hours of Mt airy should check them out(will hire right out of school). I took a week off and during that time a friend approached me about helping him open a restaurant and the rest is history. Except for the fact I did not renew my CDL(dumba$$).

So now I am experiencing complete burnout of the restaurant industry and plan to get my CDL again(hopefully--married now, no kids). I have been approved by Millis for their training academy..so far i like what I read about them. I will be training at their Eden terminal.

This site has been excellent in my decision making and studying for my tests. Thank you!

But...today I saw a craigslist ad about a small company (127 trucks) that offers CDL training and pays while you learn... RE West out of Nashville. I talked briefly w recruiter and I am interested (I have not given Millis an answer yet). Anyone familiar with RE West?

I hope to see you guys on the road. Peace!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Hey Chris. I've heard of them but unfortunately I don't know anything at all about them. Hopefully someone can chime in with something helpful in that regard.

I know we hear a lot of good things about Millis though. Definitely a great company to consider.
