Dry van companies will have the highest percentage of drop and hook loads overall. So yes, Swift will certainly do their share of drop and hook. But unless you're on a dedicated account of some sort you won't get drop and hook loads exclusively by any means. You'll get a fair share of em, maybe 15%-20% of the loads or something like that at most dry van companies.
Drop and hook means the driver will drop one trailer and hook to another one.
In order to speed up the pickup and delivery process a driver may be instructed to drop their empty trailer and hook to one that is already loaded, or drop their loaded trailer and hook to one that is already empty. That way the driver will not have to wait for a trailer to be loaded or unloaded.
I drove Swift OTR for about four months. I'd say by gosh and by golly (that means unscientific) it might be more than 50% d/h. But still plenty of live loads. That's where you just sit on your truck and wait for the forklift to do the work. Almost like d/h only you wait.
OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
