Basically, the school teaches you until you get your CDL. Some will help you find a job afterwards but some will not. After you get your CDL with the school you simply apply at companies. If they accept you then you go on the road with a trainer for 4-6 weeks and then go solo. You basically "skip" the company school and go straight with a trainer. After you pass the physical and drug tests of course.
So it'll go like this;
Go to private school. Learn to maneuver a big rig and learn pretrip. Pass the CDL exam. Get your CDL. Depending on the school, you can either be alone at this point or the school will have your back with helping you find a job. They'll try to get you prehires while you're in school learning. Then get hired at X company. Do drug test/DOT Physical. Orientation. Then go on the road with a trainer for Y amount of time. Go solo!
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.
We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.
The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.
During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

To echo what Daniel B said - I am taking the course at ACC. The instructor had us fill out 2 apps. Depending on your driving record and history, you may get a call. They also offer many other numbers to other companies should we need to explore other possibilities. Of course the interview will be schedule depending on whether you receive your license. I got a call from a major company today. Another student got a prehire from another on Friday. I did pass all of the knowledge test today so I have a permit and will be driving soon!! You will certainly want to inquire thoroughly of any school you will be giving money to. Check for accreditation.

A lot of schools get paid a commission from trucking companies when they refer students. So for anyone that's going to a private school, don't limit yourself to the companies the school tells you to apply to. Their just trying to make a few extra bucks. Apply to every company you can think of.
We have two great resources on this site:

I was going to go to Roehl's school in WI but they are letting me go to a private school (Trainco), which is a 15 min drive from my house. I have a pre-hire and once I'm done they will arrange a trainer to pick me up in my area. Trainco is very pro-active with finding students jobs. They have recruiters come in around the 3rd week of school from a lot of different companies to let students interview and find what company they want to roll with.

I recently have started thinking of going to a private school for my CDL. I understand in doing so, I want to get pre-hire letters. What I don't understand is the process from going to Private to getting a job. With Company sponsored, your on the road with instructor for 4 to 6 weeks and then return to take your DMV test for your CDL.
With a private school, do you get that same 4-6 weeks? How does this work please. Thanks
