Not going to happen in my lifetime but if and when it does come into being I see it effecting the long cross country routes first.
But here is the other thing that law makers need to think about. If you cut out millions of jobs across the country or even lower the pay, what do you think will happen to the economy? There are consequences for everything and I think the effect on the economy will be a bigger one than the lack of safety.
@Copperhead, you are correct. I read a relevant article on this topic which completely agrees with your comment that they need a driver onboard.
But driver’s actions will be limited to client handling and at emergency situations. Companies don’t need an experienced driver to handle such automated trucks. I believe that this may also reflect on our packages. Major truck manufacturers from Europe and America have already shown their interest on these trucks and experts says that they will be on the market within a decade.

That's not true. The automated trucks handle the highway driving fine in good weather. They need the driver for bad weather, city driving, and backing maneuvers. Highway driving is the easiest part of our job. The rest is where the experience, and skill, is needed.
On the flip side, if I was in one of those trucks, I would be tempted to mess with people by waiting till they were alongside me and looking, then getting up an moving away from the driver seat lol.
They will find automated trucks will be in lots of accidents... computers cannot anticipate what that minivan driver on a cellphone is going to do.. even with a driver in the truck the time needed to turn off the auto truck and have the driver take over provided hes even paying attention will take too long.
Many of the auto cars have been in accidents... there is no such thing as a harmless fender bender with an 80k truck
World’s first electric road opens in Sweden and it will be a great leap for future trucking
This week Qualcomm Navigator has frozen twice and once was about a mile off tracking my progress
On-Guard this week locked up brakes going through an underpass.and locked up brakes on a car in front of me one lane over in the right.
Pretty much typical week for these great truck driving tools. I wouldn't waste my time reading about automated trucks taking away any jobs in the near future.
Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.
Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.
