No physical abilities test what so ever. Probably some sort of agility test for Flatbedders if you decide to go that route. Just three weeks of a Mental Meat Grinder! rofl-3.gif

Ohh ok tractor guy ..i went on swift posting and saw comments on 1st day called work well here is what they said I just did it today!

First you have to step up on the second rung of a ladder 3 times. Next you have to pull 100 lbs. push 100 lbs. then the fun starts. You have to do all of this 3 times

lift 30 lbs from ground to over your head lift 50 lbs from ground to over your head lift 75 lbs from ground to over your head lift 85 lbs from ground to over your head

lift 25 lbs from waist to over your head lift 50 lbs from waist to over your head

carry 50 lbs 50 feet carry 75 lbs 50 feet

and they check your heart rate after each task and it has to be below a certain level based on your age.

It was a pain in the *** especially at 7 am, but everyone in my class passed them all.

After we did this then we did the drug screen and DOT physical.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Sounds like Basic Training! I think someone was doing a tongue in cheek posting. Nothing remotely close to that. The heaviest lifting I did was lifting a cigarette to my lips on break

Lots of Swiftys on here. I actually just upgraded to solo status this evening. One thing I will say is no company is perfect. Overall my experience has been good. Plenty of miles and freight. Take these horror stories with a grain of salt. Swift is like most otr companies. I would highly recommend them, but also do as much research as you can and find your fit. Good luck, bud!

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Chris asks:

Unless something has changed, your orientation will occur in your assigned terminal , closest to where you live and likely in the state your license is registered in.

For me I trained in Richmond VA, once graduated with CDL in hand attended orientation in Jonestown PA.

Maybe some of the more recent graduates can confirm this for you.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.
