Sounds like the long haul industry is due for an over haul and weed out those that seem to think they can just not go by the rules and unwritten rules of trucking , thick together and should have always stuck together and look after each other. I can see a nation wide strike happening soon because of it, im sure it would cripple the North American economy though.
Every word of that has been said by drivers for decades.
The problem with making a profit in trucking isn't people cheating the system. It's the fact that it's a commodity service where only the lowest price matters and the competition is fierce. You almost never make good money in a commodity business. And look at the fragmentation in the trucking industry. You can combine the top 10 companies in North America and it still doesn't add up to 1% of the trucks on the road.
There isn't going to be a strike anytime soon. Nothing big enough to do anything. And even if there was a strike there are hardly any union drivers. Without a union to bring drivers together and make sure the demands are met, what good is a strike? You would have to unionize a significant portion of the industry first.
