I do plan to g to work of one of the larger companies , I was just curious how the dispatcher thing works. If they send me to a delivery do that already have another one waiting for me to clear?

Dispatcher:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

What you have described - a load ready to go when you're done with the current one - is called a pre-plan. Generally, you know what's coming up, and the preplan could mean that once you drop, you can head out for the next pickup. It's good to keep those coming, if you can.

You do your part by getting your jobs done on time (a bit sooner almost never hurt) and be accurate on your ETA and your PTA (Projected Time of Availability).

Of anybody in your company, you want to keep your dispatcher, also called your Driver Manager - DM - happy. There will be times when you want some special request. The DM might be able to make it happen. Also, sometimes they can stand up for you in the office. Suppose you were dispatched on a load that was delivered late. Your DM knew it was because of another delay that wasn't your fault. They might be able to explain things for you in the office.

Errol, is the ETA PTA updated as you get new info? In other words are you constantly updating those times to the DM as different curve balls are tossed your way?

Bill wants to know:

You post ETA and PTA when you make a Loaded or Empty call. No need to change them. If you're stuck in a bad traffic jam, for example, just send a message on the QC. A phone call would work, but there's little documentation.

My DM IDF pretty good with those pre-plans, so all things being equal, I use the appointment times on the dispatch for my ETA times.
