Hey OldRookie what's new?

On my trainer's truck. Too busy to do much posting. I'll catch up my dairy as soon as I can.

Quick update. Only have about 2,000 more miles to go on my trainers truck.

I took and passed my CDL tests, which is a huge load off my mind.

I should be getting my own truck within the next 2 weeks.

I'll detail the period of time I spent on my trainer's truck as soon as possible.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

This past Monday, August the 15th, I completed my training and was assigned to truck 5004.

It's a 2015, Kenworth T680, with ~240k on it. Pretty clean and I'm slowly getting it stocked and setup to my liking.

My dispatcher immediately began "getting me home," in that I had been out for 8 weeks. I ended up getting home late Friday evening and will go back out early Thursday morning.

My initial plan is to typically be out 3 weeks, home 4-5 days... repeat. We will see how that goes and adjust as makes sense.

I have a LOT of thoughts re my CDL school and then my 15,000 miles of OTR training. I'll get it all out as time allows. No hurry, I plan to be around for a long time.

Thanks to this site, in general, and many of its members, in particular, I went from knowing nothing at all about this business/world... to knowing enough to be trusted with "my own truck."

Not bad, considering it has only been about 5 months since I found and joined this community. I couldn't/wouldn't have done it without this site... period.

Thanks to all who contribute here. I will do my best to return the favor.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Dispatcher:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

OWI:

Operating While Intoxicated
