Which trucker gps do you guys recommed? Does the qualcomm have a gps on it? Thanks!

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.

The big name in truck GPS is Rand McNally, the Road Atlas people. Garmin puts out a "dēzl" for trucks.

Qualcomm has its own GPS, which should get its destinations direct from your dispatcher. It can also take your own input. This is the routing, of course, your company recommends.

Non-truck GPS, like even Google Maps, you know, may not take weight, height and road restrictions into account, which can get you into a sticky situation with a 75,000 lb truck on a small or low bridge.

Dispatcher:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

I have a rand mcnally and love it. Tells you when you are approaching weigh stations. .. curves... construction. My QC gps doesn't always have the route prime wants me to take.. and gps is just a tool ... even trucker ones can be wrong

I roll with a Garmin, only once has the thing let me down it was off by 6-7 miles, but I use the map in conjunction with the GPS, so I don't expect to have that many GPS issues.....out

Rand McNally TND730 When this one stops working I am going out and buying the same one again. It has just saved me too many times when the Qualcomm goes into Freeze mode or you miss a turn and it tries to figure out a new route eventually for you. Miss a turn with Rand McNally and it is already trying to find a new route.

I like to use my tablet to zero on in (using Google Maps) my location then I get the Lat/Long for the spot I want to turn into. I plug it into my Rand McNally (uses the XX.XXXXXX Lat; -OO.OOOOOO for input which Google maps gives you). Makes life a lot easier knowing where I am going to turn at a location I have never been at.

Yes, Rand McNally is very popular. I've got a refurbished 530 for $200 off amazon. Works great and is a huge help. The qualcomm GPS is pretty terrible honestly until you get close to your destination. Typically, before I take off of course, I'll use Google maps on my phone to scope out an area. That way I'm somewhat prepared for what's ahead. Also, heads up, the rand McNally will show you where rest areas and truck stops are along your route, but NOT the size of the truck stop or whether the rest area is closed or not. Be aware of that and scope out your destination if you can.

Use Trucker Path app for info on Truck Stops, Rest Stops, Wal-Marts, etc.

While this is true to an extent, you can filter the results for truck stops by the size of the parking lot. You can also use that filter to determine if a truck stop has certain services at it like laundry, a shop, a tie shop and write a few other things as well.

I personally love trucker path. It's not always accurate BUT 9 times out of 10 it gives me what I need to know.

I always check multiple places when using the app. I check what it SAYS the number of spots is then check the reviews. Most of the time the reviews will give you more info about the stop like if it's a dirt lot or has a lot of potholes or if the parking lot size is wrong. Yeah there are a lot of yahoos on there with negative comments but if the reviews are generally good with one or two idiots outing bad reviews then I will stop.

I also use the satellite view to get an idea of the parking layout and entrance/exit if I'm able. It's nice to know where to shoot for a spot or if they are pull thrus or back in spots.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
