I read somewhere that on the CDL test there is a "Road Signs" section in the beginning where you cannot miss any of the questions. Anyone know if this is on the California CDL Permit test? I'm taking the test in a few days.

Is there anything tricky on the test that I should ensure to study before hand or be prepared for? (Outside the realm of General Knowledge / Air Brakes / Combinations)

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Hi, Shane. Have you seen the High Road Training Program? This will get yo ready for the CDL-A test. "Don't quote me", but I think professional driving is beyond knowing the shape of a STOP sign! The High Road system will work yo through the questions yo may have problems with, until yo can absolutely ACE the test. You can quote me on that!

As for any tricks, all I can think about is the strange ways some questions are phrased, like in "Which sign does NOT mean you are able to make a U-turn?" Which means yo need to pick the wrong answer!

Keep on studying, and poke around some more here. There's lots of stuff to help you make a successful trucking career.

What Errol said...

I just took the CDL permit test here in So Cal a week or so ago and there were no questions related to signs on my tests (General Knowledge / Air Brakes / Combinations). They do however, also require you to retake the class C (car) written test and or the class M1 (motorcycle) written test as well if you already have one and wish to keep it active. I did not know this going in and I had to re-take them both. I miraculously passed both without warning and or studying, I was more then a little nervous about re-taking the motorcycle portion. LOL!

The only test that I know of that deals with street / hwy signage is during your actual road test. You have to pay attention to virtually all of the street and or hwy signs as you are passing them. The DOT examiner is randomly going to ask you what the sign that you just passed said during your test. From what I understand this is very important as to whether you will pass or not.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
