If you still live in Virginia you do not have six months. If you have not submitted your new medical card within 30 days of expiration, they downgrade your license. More info here: State by State Guide to Medical Certificates.
With that said, you can still go and take a DOT physical and as long as you are otherwise qualified you will pass, the doctor will just temporarily disqualify you (probably until you get your cast off) and schedule a follow up for when you will have full use of your wrist. Check out the bottom of page three of the medical long form here: Medical Examination Report.
Go and get your physical done, and make sure you submit it to the DMV asap.
The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle
The FMCSA was established within the Department of Transportation on January 1, 2000. Their primary mission is to prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.
What Does The FMCSA Do?
The Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) is a person who evaluates employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.

BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:
It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

Agree with CS.
Most states that are in compliance with FMCSA Regs, are required to DOWNGRADE your license to a regular operators - if you do not have a current medical card.
Some states are "prickly" about it - like in Florida - you are REQUIRED to go into DMV and turn in your CDL for an Operators. As soon as you have a new DOT Med Card - they will automatically re-instate your CDL (but you have to go in and get a new one).
What is important to note for ALL DRIVERS is that - if your license has been downgraded to a Non-CDL, and you get caught driving a CMV - it is the same as DRIVING A CMV WITHOUT A CDL.
So be VERY CAREFUL about your Med Card expiration. Go in 30 days early to renew it - and MAKE SURE you get it to your states DMV BEFORE the expiration. Most states (Florida is one), have a site that allows you to upload a copy of your card and self-certify (to save you a trip to a local DMV).

Hello all,
I recently broke my wrist on the job after having the strap break on the door. Well, the issue I have is, my medical card expires 6/15/16. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea on 3/15/16 so, I only got a 3 month card. I had to wait to make some money before I could buy a cpap machine because of no insurance. So, I finally got my compliance report where I need it and now I wouldn't be able to pass a dot physical with my broken wrist. My work said that I have 6 months to obtain a new medical card without losing my cdl.
I'm just wondering if this is true or not.
