I am unemployed and may be homeless within the next week. I need to get my cdl A asap. I live in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Can travel anywhere.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

SAP:

Substance Abuse Professional

The Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) is a person who evaluates employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

I was awarded the WIA grant and I live here in GA as well. I was employed at the time but still given the grant. It covered my tuition entirely. May be something you could look into.

Mike, look into Paid CDL Training Programs. Those companies will train you with little or no money out of pocket and they usually get You in pretty quickly.

Someone on here today said they applied to Prime Inc and they (Prime) called saying they could get them into a class starting the 20th of June if the background check was good.

Get the grant if you can. If not, go company sponsored. But if you are going into trucking for the need of immediate money, you might want to consider other options. It takes time out here to know how to consistently make money.
