Endorsements are optional but highly recommended. I got mine the day I picked my license up. Some states allow u to bank your scores when you get your permit. I would suggest taking the exams prior to getting your hard copy cdl , as the endorsements are 5$ apiece if you do them all at once and more expensive after you get your hard copy. Also, if you plan on getting hazmat , get your background check done as soon as possible as it can take a few weeks to be cleared.

I was reading a thread that made it seem like you get your endorsements while testing for your CDL-A Permit. I was under the impression that you got your endorsements during CDL school.
