Even with experience driving a tanker, can only be learned in a tanker. Driving a van is no way similar, that is why you train in a tanker to drive tanker.
I certainly wouldn't say that pulling a dry van is in no way similar to pulling a tanker. It's clearly similar in many ways. It's just that there are additional considerations with tanker. So you should learn to drive initially with dry van, refrigerated, or even flatbed before attempting to pull a tanker.
Dry Van:
A trailer or truck that that requires no special attention, such as refrigeration, that hauls regular palletted, boxed, or floor-loaded freight. The most common type of trailer in trucking.
