Okay so my company just took me on an intermodal account this week, I'm stoked! They just offered me a brand new cascadia with a baby bunk on it 10k miles and it shifts like a dream! I currently have a T680 with 300k on it but plenty of room. I'm hesitant because the lack of space but it also shifts so smooth because they guy who previously drove my current truck beat on it badly. I'm probably due for a new truck anyways right? Don't most of the mega carriers get rid of them around 300k? I feel like now is my chance to grab another 10 speed before they just take my truck and put me in an automatic. What would you pick?

Intermodal:

Transporting freight using two or more transportation modes. An example would be freight that is moved by truck from the shipper's dock to the rail yard, then placed on a train to the next rail yard, and finally returned to a truck for delivery to the receiving customer.

In trucking when you hear someone refer to an intermodal job they're normally talking about hauling shipping containers to and from the shipyards and railyards.

I would pick the automatic. Why shift gears, especially in traffic. I have driven stick shift vehicles for the better part of 40 years. I think the "Automatic Trucks aren't REAL TRUCKS argument is mostly Ego. Hey its 2016! You can hardly find a stick shift car anymore, unless is a Performance car. I hope like hell that I get issued an automatic Truck when I test out with Swift next week. I am perfectly competent with a manual transmission, I just prefer the motto "Work Smarter not Harder !

Agreed I fought hard to get an auto when I tested out in phoenix... they had 20 2016 auto cascadia and would not give me one... I tried and tried and got stuck with a pos 8 speed that slugs up hills. At least give me a 10 speed if I'm in a manual....

Thank God I'll go to an auto t680 soon. Automatic 13 speed better hill climb better hill decent and better mpgs and no shifting in stop and go. My knee hates rush hour shifting bring on autos baby.

I just consider it a work out, driving stick is like a lifestyle for me. My personal car is a 6 speed and my truck is a 10. If they gave me an auto to be honest I would quit on the spot and find a new job.

That's just how I grew up man, it's more than driving a truck to me, it's a lifestyle. Nothing feels better than shifting and feeling that power.

Good luck with your new career, whatever it will be. Most Carrier's are going to Automatic Fleets over the next several years. Better fuel mileage! Its all about the bottom line. Would you prefer your old FLIP PHONE from 10 years ago because that is the cell phone that you learned on, or do you appreciate the new technology of your Smart phone?

So, Kaz, why are you asking? There's been people with their own "deal breakers" on TT. Quitting a career over the transmission ranks just above "I won't drive a purple KW" (my first truck).

At home I also drive a 6 speed manual pickup (diesel no less). I've driven both manual KWs and now in an auto FL Cascadia. I don't care if the shifting is stick, manual or ESP.

There's enough difference in the design details in the cab to make me miss driving/ living in a Kenworth. Yes, they took mine away from me around 300k miles. Sniff.

Kaz, if you are running intermodal , my assumption the rail yards within your territory are in congested, urban areas. If that's the case you will be thankful for the automatic.

I've been in an automatic for over a year now. Unless it negatively effects my paycheck, it's a moot point.
