Hey, I just want to get your guys thoughts on removing passenger seat for more space.....Mostly what a Trucking company might say about it if they see you removed it..

Im a company driver and I take my truck home with me....No "company" person has seen my Truck since I left a Terminal with it in March of this year. I have to bring it in for a 80,000 mile maintenance interval and some minor repairs. I already took it upon myself to remove the seat a month ago for space for my fridge/cooler......It was a regular seat,,,no air ride or fancy switches. Only took a ratchet to loosen 4 long bolts to remove it. Have it stored in my basement. Anyway, So know i'm wondering if I should reinstall it for my trip to the terminal.

What do u guys think? Would they really care? I mean, I would certainly put it back in if I were to leave the company.. I work for Roehl Transport....If anyone who knows about their policy on that can chime in, perhaps....

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

I have no idea what they would say about it. When you find out let me know because I drive for them too and I have thought about it but haven't done it yet

During our orientation they showed a picture of a truck that had a small refrigerator in place of where the passenger seat should have been. Apparently it was discovered when the truck came in for routine service. They make light of it during the orientation but make sure everyone knows not to alter the truck in any way without running the idea through the shop first.

I'd say put it back in and ask someone at the shop to do it, without mentioning that you've already done it before. If they won't do it, you could just not tell anyone and take it out again after leaving the terminal , but you're taking a chance. Say someone backs into you and you have to go to a terminal to get it fixed--if you don't have a chance to pick up the seat first, you're in trouble.

Just be honest with them. I'm sure it's happened before.

Better to ask forgiveness than permission.

I would think you meant that the other way around. At least I would hope so.

I agree with Paul. I would either send a Qualcomm message to the shop asking them if it's ok to do that or put it back before you go in. I wouldn't chance it. There was a driver in here a while back that decided to screw the floormat to the floor because it kept getting caught in his feet and they fired him for it. They said he wasn't allowed to alter company vehicles without permission. Seriously.

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.
