Good Afternoon, My boyfriend and I are planning on going to Road Master in Tampa for our CDL training and license. I am 27 and he's 31. There are two schools after that we are looking to attending Werner or Covenant. Can anyone recommend a better school between the two, the pros and cons?

After looking up the information online, there so so so many articles and recruiters trying to get you to attend the school. Road Master is $5,000 upfront or you can finance it for $7,000 and it will be taken out of your check. Which is OK with me as we do not have kids, a house and any other really big loans we owe. Both of our credit is decent and we are planning on paying it back within a year.

Covenant claims they pay .42 Cents per mile after your 8 weeks of training with them. I don't have much info on Werner as our recruiter is pushing us to go to Covenant. Reviews seem ok.

Any information will help lead us in the right directions. I understand live and learn but with no experience in the trucking business any help would be greatly appreciated. Plus, we plan on brining our pup with us.

  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Paige.. are you going to Roadmasters or a company sponsored school? You won't need 2 schools. Basically you go to cdl school, get your license then go to work for whatever company you apply to and are accepted at. As a new driver, you attend company orientation, then complete that company's training program as a paid employee and once you test out with the company, you're issued your truck and you are on your way. Experienced new hires skip the training part and are issued their truck right after orientation.

42 cpm? I honestly thought they paid more than that for teams at Covenant. Maybe that's just their new grad rate? I'd ask each company what the starting team rate is and ask them about scheduled increases and any accessorial pay like drop n hook, layover, breakdown; fuel, mileage, and safety bonuses too.

I'm also confused about a recruiter working for several different companies. . My experience has been that a recruiter works for one company, and I'd speak with recruiters from many different companies, if I were you. Just my 2 cents.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

CPM:

Cents Per Mile

Drivers are often paid by the mile and it's given in cents per mile, or cpm.
