Trucker admits to texting in deadly crash that killed GSU students
1.) Johnson admitted under oath to texting when the crash happened. He also added that messages he received contained nude images of a woman, as his truck’s cab was filled with pornography.
2.) Johnson’s application to Total Transportation revealed he had been fired from two other truck companies previously.
3.) Johnson had been fired from one company, for falling asleep at the wheel, overturning the truck and totaling it.
4.) The company’s safety director said that he didn’t have a good excuse for why they hired him.
At least he took responsibility for his actions by taking a plea.
Wow... How sad for all involved.
He copped a plea, not to "admit guilt" - but to avoid the 20+ he would have scored at trial.
5 years for killing 5 people due to obvious negligence is a total miscarriage of justice...
Rick
I really just have no words.
Sometimes the idiocy of people just makes me sick.

Gotta agree with you on this Rick. Nothing makes me more angry than to see a trucker texting while operating their vehicle. Stupid is where it begins...
If these are all the facts, the company's safety director is as much at fault for allowing this individual behind the wheel of a semi in the first place.
Operating While Intoxicated
5 lives = 5 years. Total has to pay $78 million. Three years from now the guy walks out. Too bad the court can't at least make him work at minimum wage till he can pay the company back.
Is life that cheap?
IMO anyone who kills another while texting or driving while intoxicated deserves an automatic murder charge.

Trucker in deadly Georgia crash gets five years
"The driver, John Wayne Johnson, of Shreveport, La., pleaded guilty last week in a Georgia state court to causing the deadly April 22, 2015, pileup that also left two other nursing students with serious injuries. He pleaded guilty to nine counts including five counts of first-degree vehicular homicide, according to court records. Among the conditions of his plea agreement are that he must surrender his commercial driver’s license for life."
"Both Johnson and his employer – Total Transportation of Mississippi – were indicted by a grand jury last month. Charges against Total Transportation were dismissed after the company spent $200,000 to establish an education fund for student nurses. The company has also paid out more than $78 million to the families of the crash victims."
