Tony, There must be TONS of free material on the subject right here on the good ol' internet. Run some Google searches and you will still be reading way past your 21st birthday! Good Luck
Tony, as a company driver you won't need to know the finer points of injector service. It's great to know a what's under the hood. But if you can do the pre-trip inspection that's about it. O/Os, like your dad, are responsible for their own rig so it's good to know for them.
Diesel knowledge is not something companies look for in their drivers. Spend your time working on backing up a 53' trailer.
A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.
Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.
Hey Tony, if you find an answer to your question I hope you'll post it here. I might be interested myself. While most of it will probably never be needed by a driver, I figure it can't hurt to know as much as possible, and you never know when it will help out. Of course like Errol says, don't let it distract from learning what you need to become a driver.

Hey everyone, so I am currently in CDL school hoping to get my license in the near future, I'm only 20 years old though which I know will make it hard to land a job before my 21 birthday. I plan on driving my dads rig (he's an OO) part time until the day I can quit my current job and hit the road.
I figured while I'm waiting for my 21st birthday I would try and learn about diesel engines and basic trouble shooting, figured this will prove invaluable down the line. I don't have much time or money to spare so formal schooling isn't necessarily an option, just wondering if anybody can recommend a book or two that will at least give me a basic understanding into the world of diesel repairs.
