If I was in this situation: let's call the boss bill.
Hey bill you gotta minute?
If he says yeah what's up.
There's a couple things wrong with this truck. I know times are slow right now. I'm willing to fix a couple of the major things wrong with this truck if you'll pay for the parts. Then next time I can fix a couple more things till we get it running right.
But before Igo to Panama i have to fix the lights. It might be a couple wires or a switch. Nothing major
I need to take a look at the windshield wipers they're not working either... Maybe there is another truck we can pull parts off of?
The front end I need to grease it up and check everything out if somethings worn out I'll pull it off and replace it.
If he replies. I pay you to drive. Then I'll say ok then whose going to fix it because I'm not driving it if it's unsafe.
(If it's really unsafe)

I didn't jump ship per se when I went home time to transfer my license back to MS from Iowa I had left my my birth certificate on the trainers truck(my fault yes I know) considering I was born in Georgia I had to order another BS FM kept in contact but took almost two months to get it. By that time hadn't heard anything from them and already had a job making good money so didn't bother with it. BTW not my current employer.
Fm:
Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager
The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.
