Jeff I'm going to Joplin for orientation. Where are they sending you? I start waiting for a trainer Friday the 20th. Might still be waiting Monday the 22!

Well I got an unexpected lucky break! A local company agreed to take me on with my permit and train me and give me an LineHaul job so I am going to get to stay home and be home every day and still drive! I will start a new post with the details may give some other folks and idea. Good Luck in training Bucket

Linehaul:

Linehaul drivers will normally run loads from terminal to terminal for LTL (Less than Truckload) companies.

LTL (Less Than Truckload) carriers will have Linehaul drivers and P&D drivers. The P&D drivers will deliver loads locally from the terminal and pick up loads returning them to the terminal. Linehaul drivers will then run truckloads from terminal to terminal.

I'm in the same situation right now. Been researching several companies in Texas. Roehl has been on the top of my list, but I stumbled onto FFE and like what they offer. Maybe a smidgen low on starting cpm , but their drop & hook line sounds like a plan. Keeps the wheels rolling from what I understand and you make up the cpm with more miles. But haven't truly made up my mind yet.

CPM:

Cents Per Mile

Drivers are often paid by the mile and it's given in cents per mile, or cpm.

Have you looked here? Paid CDL Training Programs The company does not have to be located in your state. They just need freight going there. I know CFI has a terminal in Texas. They have a great company sponsored training program in Missouri. There headquarters is in Joplin. Here is my training diary. My recruiter is Annie, she is fantastic. Her number is (417) 659-5163. CFI has made me feel that they are truly interested in having me work for them. In the end, I am biased. You must make your own decision. Figure out what you need with a company. It's not just about CPM. This may help.

Good luck.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

CPM:

Cents Per Mile

Drivers are often paid by the mile and it's given in cents per mile, or cpm.

Company Sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
