Troubador, I'm real happy for you. It really sounds like you were very fortunate in finding a team partner right on the bus and then get to room with him while in school. I wish you guys the best - I like the idea of team driving, I just never was sure I'd be able to endure it for a year with someone that I had no prior knowledge of. It's a great way to make some good money, and it's a great way to get some really good miles under your belt which makes for that great learning curve we always talk about during that first year. I know you didn't have a whole lot of choice in this whole decision, but you will benefit greatly from your first year, and you may decide you love the whole team thing after all, but if you don't you will have gained some invaluable lessons in life on the road, and you will have effectually set yourself up for some other great opportunities for your future career. Roll on my friend!
I am very lucky Oldschool, of course part of being lucky comes from having a bit of experience in life and knowing when to take advantage of those situations. Same is true of what to avoid. I met more than one person, I would never even get close to teaming with. I ended up with one guy at school, that after 2 laps around the course, I asked to get out of the truck because he was one of the most unsafe drivers I have ever seen. Couple of people, though, I would not team with, simply because they were quite a bit younger than me, and even though, we got along, our likes and dislikes would be vastly different. Andy, my future codriver is close to my age, and has been in the same situation in life economically the last few years, finding his skills are no longer relevant, even though they used to make him a good living. So having goals that are close also helps. And he has already proven to have my back, and mine his, just from us working together in school by helping each other. One person would use his strengths in one thing to help the other in things he did not do as well at. Thats team work!

On the bus trip up, we routed through and laid over in Atlanta, which is right next to the jail.We were all warned by other passengers not to hang out and stay in the bus station. Said a lot of people were known to get mugged.
After rooming with this guy for 3 weeks, I think I made a good choice. He respects my privacy when I need it, and there was no time he was in my things. He was never drunk or under the influence of anything. He did not disappear for long times with no explanation. Plus, I believe him when he says he is there for the same reasons I am, to run hard and make money. I also got to drive with him a lot in school, and can see he is not a maniac behind the wheel. We set up early on things like buying the groceries, one time, he would, next time I would. He is as frugal minded as I am. He is also clean and neat. That all works for me.
