Hey Rainy, I'm curious of all failed Prime lease operator attempts how many would you say are rookie drivers, and how many are experienced? That you've seen anyway, I know thats not hard info you would have at your fingertips.
First you have to answer how many rookies both company or lease dont make it through the first year.
MOST never make it one year. Period. So why burden yourself with additional responsibilities and concerns? Why put youself in debt....and yes... even with a walk away lease you are in debt for whatever damage or repairs need to be made to the truck...including drill holes for TV, game systems, etc. whatever wear n tear or cosmetic damage.
IMO, no one should go straight from training to lease. Can it be done? Sure. Are they successful? Perhaps but the definition of success is subjective. i know a lease op who told me he had a very successful first year cause in the end he made $50,000 which he said was "way more than a company driver". Amazing that our Turtle made $65,000 his first year in flatbed as a company driver. I posted on here my first year end and it was $43 or $48k i dont remember. But not that far off...but i know for a fact i went home more than that lease op, had insurance and got a ton of 401k contributions.
There are 2 failed lease ops i will never forget. One picked up the first load and a mile down the road rolled the truck. Never even delivered the first load....didnt even drive the truck for 30 minutes.
The other was in Maine and never drove in snow before. Instead of parking he continued through a blizzard. He jack knifed. I happened to meet him on my 30 minute break. The police had dropped him off at a rest area. He was asking any Prime driver he saw for help. He said, "What the hell was i thinking? I used my first check to pay some bills but was in the hole my whole first month. I have no money and just wrecked."
I gave him $200 and another prime lease op gave him a ride to god knows where. I gave him my number but he never called.
When i tell new people these stories i am sometimes told im being extreme. perhaps. however they happened and unless you make yourself aware of ALL possibilities, you shouldnt even consider it.

Exactly! i have a lease op friend who only gets these short leases, then turns in the truck after 6 mos and takes a month off, then gets the next truck. He says it is the only way he can afford to get time off but who wants to run for 6 mos straight and swap trucks that often??? changing trucks is murder to me. ive complained about every 18 mos for a newer truck!!! and the kicker is, he is not getting a newer truck!
