Despite popular belief, you can get your CDL on your own without going to any school and you can get a job without any as some companies call it "proper training". One company is Western Express. They advertise that they take drivers who got their CDL on their own without going to a school. Their policy is No experience? Never attended truck driving school? No problem! I like their statement of "You don’t want to waste your time and money learning what you already know". They basically send you out with a trainer for a couple weeks and then your good to go! I'm glad that one company finally realized that for some people, being able to drive a truck just comes naturally!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Joe, we know it can be done. We also know you can wrestle with a gorilla and win the fight, but we don't recommend it!

There is a way to do just about anything, but that doesnt mean the outcome will always be good.

We do our best to help people get this thing started off right, so we will stick to the program that has a proven track record of success.

By the way, I spent a good deal of time at Western Express. This is my opinion only, but I think they will eventually change this approach. They struggle with their CSA score over there, and they are working to recognize their weak spots so they can improve it. That program will probably be nixed soon, so if that is what you think will get your foot in the door, you'd better jump quick.

CSA:

Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA)

The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle
