I have been interested in driving trucks since i graduated highschool but never had the right time or opportunity to get started as i know from research you need full attention and time atleast for your first year. Having said that i currently live in Sweden (i am American) but will be returning back stateside and wondering if anyone has any advice as to how i get started. i have read nearly everything on truckingtruth but my questions lie here:

I have a VA drivers license but do not intend on returning to VA, do i need to attend a school in VA? My mother lives in Indianapolis and my father outside Pittsburgh area. does anyone recommend a school in either location to obtain my CDL?

on this site i have read about places like Roehl Transport based out of Marshfield, WI. Does that mean i would attend school there, graduate, work for them as well as move there? relocating for me isnt too much of a concern as i stated it is just me. But i am just wondering if you need to move to the locations of these company HQ's.

Thank you for you time. i hope i was clear in my queations.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Forgot another question. i have noticed that a lot of trucking companys want to know about your work history and check on things. Will it be a problem that i have lived out of the country for a couple years?

Welcome Kenneth, Living outside of the USA should not be a problem as I have done the same thing. As long as you have a drivers license in the US for at least a year, you should be good to go. I initially had hesitancy in companies wanting to talk to me to, given that I lived outside of the US for over 20 years, but as long as you have had a consistent work history and can/have documentation verifying your work history for at least 5 years, you should be good..don't get discouraged..keep calling recruiters and bugging them..there is a great tool on here to use..Apply For Truck Driving Jobs

Thanks for the reply... good info. I think i will end up returning to the Indianapolis area and hopefully be able to find a good school to get started with.
