The real limiting factor is the wire size of the source power. Cig /acc plugs are only 16 or 18 gauge. 20 amps pushed by 12 volts through that wire size is okay for limited duration. I 'm willing to bet the wire size on those products mentioned ( connected direct to battery) is around 4 gauge, which is substantially larger.

You're right. But the wires you have no control over are the ones "in the dash" that go from the battery to the 12v socket. Whatever they are, they are.

(Note for the uninitiated: Wire gauge is "backwards", like shotguns: 16 gauge is larger than 18 gauge.)

I was able to find a 400 watt inverter that was 12v plug only, is that too much? Generally, the only thing I run off of it is my laptop, or my roku box (once I get a tv)

Cigarette plug or wire is not the issue....... your battery should be powerful to run a refrigerator........ You must have an inverter of approx. 300W.

I just got a BESTEK 1000w power inverter that provides 1000 Watts continuous DC to AC power and 2400W peak power with AC outlet. I haven't used it for refrigerator, but use it to charge coffee maker and juice blender. It works fine. If you're not very sure about it, you can try BESTEK 2000W power inverter.
