It may not. OOODA is still fighting it.

Hey guys,

Does anyone know when the manditory electronic log law will go into effect? Thanks in advance!

The law is set to take effect in December 2017. As Robert stated, the OOIDA has been fighting it and a court ruling is set to be issued by the end of this year.

OOIDA:

Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association

Who They Are

OOIDA is an international trade association representing the interests of independent owner-operators and professional drivers on all issues that affect truckers. The over 150,000 members of OOIDA are men and women in all 50 states and Canada who collectively own and/or operate more than 240,000 individual heavy-duty trucks and small truck fleets.

Their Mission

The mission of OOIDA is to serve owner-operators, small fleets and professional truckers; to work for a business climate where truckers are treated equally and fairly; to promote highway safety and responsibility among all highway users; and to promote a better business climate and efficiency for all truck operators.

The rule has been published.

It's not TOO HORRIBLE (compliance-wise). Most of the larger companies have already implemented it.

There are a number of apps for iDevice/Droids that are FMCSA compliant, that aren't very expensive to get up and running on (I've played with a few for laughs).

Who this is going to affect the most, are the smaller single unit O/O's - or companies that lease on O/O's (like LandStar, etc.) that don't run on QC's (or similar devices, peoplenet, etc.), and still have trucks running paper logs.

This is going to hurt the smaller/individuals less from a $$ standpoint in getting complaint - than it is in STAYING COMPLIANT - since, let's face it - a great number of smaller guys on paper logs, still cheat.

Again - large companies are already pretty much in compliance. The bigger issue for individual drivers without a legal department is that the rule as published is some 126 pages in the federal register. As with all federal regulations, it's very wordy and convoluted - and difficult for the average layman owner to understand.

OOIDA's "primary argument" in their court case, is that the GPS feature of the ELD rule, violates the 4th amendment.

OOIDA hits FMCSA with lawsuit to block ELD mandate

For the purposes of this board and what we do here - that is - help new entrants into the industry get TRUTHFUL INFORMATION about getting into the industry - the implementation of ELOGS is a NON-ISSUE - since pretty much EVERY SINGLE COMPANY a new entrant is going to get hired by is ALREADY RUNNING THEM.

And you will STILL have to know how to keep a paper log as a backup, in case the ELOG system has a breakdown. So you still need to be familiar with HOS rules and how to log on paper with them. Just like you still need to learn HOW TO READ A MAP - as no GPS is going to be perfect either.
