When you first went on the road and found lifestyles or areas that were so different from yours... what were they?

In IN not only was everyone smoking but they were raffling off guns at a charity event. Can't do either in NJ

Someone told me to "go a country block then take a left" COUNTRY block????

Prices were 50% or more cheaper than home.

Signs that said "choose life" next to "buy guns"

People begging in parking lots.. it happens at home, but rarely... probably cause NJ'yans are mean and won't give anything. Lol

What was different from your home?

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

The incredible diversity in the trucking field. People from every walk of life imaginable are out here doing this job. It was not a shock, but a welcome surprise.

Lol everything Rainy has said on here about NJ makes me not want to live there, like ever.

But really the street beggars that are shaking so bad from DTs. Traffic in the Los Angeles along with DFW Tx area. Also just how random people can be, you never know what your going to get when the truck next to you opens the door. I've met some really cool people and I've met people from the opposite end of that scale also.

Just how grumpy a lot of truckers are.

The truck stop filth, open sewer and garbage strewn about. The vast open spaces, not just in the west where I'm from but the Midwest and east have a lot of rural areas. I didn't expect that.

DFW traffic is a breeze compared to Houston. I do find the diversity interesting.

The incredible amount of time you spend alone in the truck was something I hadn't expected. And like Rob said the vast amount of open space in this country! See, I'm a loner to begin with so the solitude was great. Lots of time to clear your mind and ponder life and enjoy each moment and read a lot of books. But realizing that 95% of the land in this great country is unoccupied made me wonder why so many people live on top of each other and waste their lives fighting all the time.

I live way out in the country, up on a hill with a dog and some chickens and a garden. It's quiet and peaceful and easy. The only rat race I experience is if I'm literally chasing a rat away from the chicken feed with a shovel.

But yeah, vast amounts of solitude and vast stretches of open space. Oh, and I didn't expect Albuquerque at night to be such a beautiful sight and I didn't expect Utah to be such a beautiful place. No one ever told me about that.
