Hey guys.
I just got my CDL Class A. I went through a private trucking school, paid for by the VA. I was active duty Navy for 9 years, was honorably discharged and joined the Navy Reserves. I was given a Administrative Discharge for weight and a failed drug screen (Marijuana). That was 3 years ago. I've been told by CRST that I have to wait 10 years and Shneider told me 5 years. Is this going to prevent me from gaining employment as a long haul, OTR driver? I haven't smoked in months, passed my DOT physical and drug screen and currently hold a Class A CDL.
You basically answered your question. You are going to have to wait and even at that you may be totally done. A failed drug test is a driver career suicide.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
It wasn't a DOT related test.

But its still a reportable failed drug test except you failed it for the federal government and guess who governs trucking? The feds. You may still find a smaller outfit that might look at you with it being 3 years old but you will have to look hard.

Yeah, all you can do it apply like crazy everywhere possible and keep pursuing opportunities. Beyond the regular channels, check out Craigslist for some smaller companies. A lot of them advertise jobs on there.
Locally you might want to speak with logging companies, large farms, and dumpster haulers like Waste Management. Any of those may give you an opportunity.
Just an update. Prime took me. Interstate almost took me, they have a 3 year rule they also do a 6 month hair follicle test. Just FYI.
Commercial trade, business, movement of goods or money, or transportation from one state to another, regulated by the Federal Department Of Transportation (DOT).

Thanks! Yeah they've been pretty good so far. Only have 10 more states on my "to see" list. I'm about 1,000 miles away from upgrading to my own truck.
