Oh man, I was also 21 when I started driving and what an adventure in so many ways! I agree that the alone time to digest all of the sites you see and the experiences you live out there really expands your view of the world and your understanding of yourself. I lived on the road and to this day I've never been married and have no kids. I was always a loner and travelled alone for years, but totally went out and enjoyed the crowds too - NASCAR races, football games from Little League to the NFL, carnivals, festivals, beaches, Vegas - you name it. I wanted to see and experience everything I could.
I also did a lot of reading - philosophy, psychology, religion, self-help - anything and everything that I thought would give me new and deeper insights into the world and people around me. Man, I wish there would have been such a thing as Kindle back then! I had a big cardboard box full of books under the bed. I had to hit book stores all the time. Once in a while I'd get lucky and stumble upon a used book store where I could trade in my whole box of books I had finished and fill it with new ones!
It's funny because I was super lucky to be born with the brains to be a rocket scientist or a brain surgeon but chose truck driving as my first career. Seriously, my ma wanted to jump straight into her grave! LoL! But wow, what an amazing adventure and a tremendous learning experience at the same time.
I can't imagine a career that offers as much as trucking does in so many ways, and yet nothing asks as much of you at the same time. If people would just stick it out for that first year and push themselves through the hardest part in the beginning they'd gain so much from their time out there.
We've had a number of "college vs trucking" conversations in here over the years and I think trucking is an awesome choice for a lot of people. I think you're going to learn a ton about yourself and the world around you, you're going to have a tremendous adventure for sure, you're going to avoid those gigantic student loans, and you'll make really solid money at the same time.
Glad to hear you're taking it all in Gladhand. The adventure is just beginning. There's a lot of fun ahead of you!
