How do you get anywhere if you do not know an exact address? There will be no more getting in the car and just driving. And what about the places that don't have an address or brand new buildings and roads that aren't in the system yet? Happens all the time with GPS This will never fully take place
I'm not worried about automated cars getting too popular any time soon. Nothing like what we saw in that move, I, Robot with Will Smith. I saw on the news a few months ago that a driver was killed even though they had a self-driving car. There was a stop sign (or a light, can't remember now) and when the light changed the car pulled out and was hit by a tractor trailer.
The type of self driving car this person had still required the driver to pay attention to the surroundings. He didn't and he died as a result. As for the big 18-wheelers becoming automated...I don't see that for a LONG time.
I haven't heard that song in ages.
I honestly thought it was a poem

AAAHHHHH.........Youth! That was great Linden! You gave an Old Guy a good chuckle!

When semi trucks become automated(awhile), I think it will be only interstates and with a driver in the bunk. You could pick up a load on the east coast going to the west coast and once the truck is on the interstate , just watch TV and sleep until the truck needs to fuel and the driver would help for that. You don't have to worry about logging. The pay will really go down then because your job will be just babysitting the truck.

I remember when the Segway was going to change transportation as we know it.
After all the hype, the market decided there was a niche fit for it. I predict the same will be true for autonomous cars and big trucks.
At Tyson there are shuttle drivers that drive 14 miles one way between 2 plants. They do this repeatedly, back and forth, all day long. Why not use an automated truck with a "truck monitor" to keep an eye on things.
It will be very limited in scope, but I think it will happen. It worked for Paul Blart, Mall Cop!

I completely agree. I would never buy a driverless car. What's interesting to me, and the reason I keep posting stories like this, is that big business and big tech are really beginning to put all their weight behind this.
Ford is designing cars that have no controls for humans (no steering wheels, gas pedals, brake pedals). Lyft is predicting the end of individually-owned cars by 2025. People are pushing to ban human drivers entirely from heavily traveled stretches of interstate highways (in this article, I-5 from Seattle to Vancouver).
I shudder at the thought. I love to drive. I don't want to have to rely on some automated system to get me around in my old age.
Suppose it all comes true. What if someone decides you don't need to travel to wherever it is you want the car to take you? That's the opposite of freedom. I want no part of it. In fact, I often think that now would be a great time to start either a horse breeding operation or a motorcycle repair place so people will be able to go where they want to if it comes to pass.
Maybe I'm crazy too, but in my experience, a lot of this stuff that is supposed to give us more freedom has he opposite effect.
