So I was taking a a break from driving and had a joint. Thought it would be out of my system when I started applying for another driving job. MRO called me b4 sending results to company, sense level was so low asking if I took something to give a false positive. My question is when failing a previous employment drug test and I apply to a different company will the new company see those results even though they did not hire me or was employed by them? Thanks

Time to look for a new trade. You fail a drug test and you basically will never work as a Class A driver again.

Actually that's not true. There are a lot of companies that will hire someone after a few years has gone by since the failed test. And I'm sure there are small mom-n-pop operations that would hire you right now.

You can apply anywhere you like but in the end you're probably going to have to scour Craigslist for some work. Look for jobs with big farms, logging companies, waste disposal, and things like that.

Unfortunately you're probably going to have to go through the Return-to-Duty Process - have a look at that link.

Ok thanks. Guess I'll go back to my old career. Would you happen to know if that failed test will show up for a job that is not a CDL position?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

If it was a pre-employment screen for a driving position (DOT Drug Screen) - you pretty much blew driving until a return to duty process has been completed (as Brett elaborated and linked to).

This should not show up as a fail - for a non-dot job position.

Taking a break from driving, and had "a joint". Typically - a SINGLE JOINT is only going to drop you hot for a week or two. Really, if at all.

Takes a lot more than JUST ONE JOINT, to drop hot weeks later.

Type of test can also make a difference I believe. I don't think companies are allowed to share it if it's a hair test as the test isn't approved by FMCSA. If it's a UA test it is most definitely listed. This was in a June 2016 article.......Frustrated by yearslong delays, a substantial number of mostly large motor carriers already have implemented hair testing on their own alongside DOT-mandated urine tests. However, privacy laws do not permit those carriers to share those hair test failures with other carriers, said Ronald Flegel, SAMHSA’S director of workplace programs and chairman of the agency’s drug testing advisory board.
