Hello everyone,

I am Will. I got accepted to Prime's Training School on October 31. I am excited and a little apprehensive as this is a new career change. I have done mostly factory work and was last employed at an aircraft plant where I did a good job, got along with everyone, and left on good terms. I have been studying for the CDL permit and am almost ready to begin testing for that part.

I do have some questions regarding Prime in general.

1. What items do I need to bring with me for training?

2. If you are a company driver, do you get to drive the tractor home or leave at the terminal?

3. I need to call the recruiter on Monday, I was wondering if I can drive my personal vehicle to Springfield and have someone else drive it back as I live only 3 hours away from Springfield.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Hi!!! And welcome. First yes you get to take the truck home without the trailer. Sometimes I park it at a truck stop others I get a hotel room and park there

They will probably not allow you to drive the car due to limited parking. I was told I couldn't others were told they could. I think about three classes after me were told no.

Bring birth certificate... With a raised state seal. Social security card w2/from last three years.... A few if your most recent pay stubs., a voided check or form from your bank for direct deposit...... Even if the recruiter has that they will ask again.

If you have any physical issues then bring documentation from your doctor stating the issue is under control. If you have sleep apnea then bring 30 days results.

As far as clothes... Your stuff will be on your bed. So space is limited. .. Bring stuff you can layer cause you could be in WY snow one day and in GA heat the next. Blanket pillow..

If you click on my name you will we a bunch of my prime comments and even a thread called "My prime PSD experience"

Good luck

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

PSD:

Prime Student Driver

Prime Inc has a CDL training program and the first phase is referred to as PSD. You'll get your permit and then 10,000 miles of on the road instruction.

The following is from Prime's website:

Prime’s PSD begins with you obtaining your CDL permit. Then you’ll go on the road with a certified CDL instructor for no less than 75 hours of one-on-one behind the wheel training. After training, you’ll return to Prime’s corporate headquarters in Springfield, Missouri, for final CDL state testing and your CDL license.

Obtain CDL Permit / 4 Days

  • Enter program, study and test for Missouri CDL permit.
  • Start driving/training at Prime Training Center in Springfield, Missouri.
  • Work toward 40,000 training dispatched miles (minimum) with food allowance while without CDL (Food allowance is paid back with future earnings).

On-the-Road Instruction / 10,000 Miles

  • Train with experienced certified CDL instructor for 3-4 weeks in a real world environment.
  • Get 75 hours of behind-the-wheel time with one-on-one student/instructor ratio.
  • Earn 10,000 miles toward total 40,000 miles needed.

I do have some questions regarding Prime in general.

+Bring all your personal shower and hygiene items. There's a Walmart nearby within walking distance of the Campus Inn if you forget something. You'll get $200 spending money after orientation. You'll end up paying this back when you're hired at 0% Zero interest.

1. What items do I need to bring with me for training?

+Your Recruiter will e-mail you a list of what to bring. 7-days worth of clothes. This time of year can range from warm to freezing temps depending where you go. So, bring 7-days worth. There's laundry facilities at campus inn and at the truck stops. I fit everything in a back pack and a large duffle bag including a sleeping bag. There's room for duffle bag in the top bunk where you'll sleep. You'll be living out of it while you're training..

2. If you are a company driver, do you get to drive the tractor home or leave at the terminal?

+Yes, take it home.

3. I need to call the recruiter on Monday, I was wondering if I can drive my personal vehicle to Springfield and have someone else drive it back as I live only 3 hours away from Springfield.

+Ask your recruiter. Why leave it there when you can drive the tractor home? Or leave tractor at the yard and drive your PV home. Most cars left at the yard just sit there and know one ever moves them. A waste IMO.

Good luck in orientation.
