Hi, My husband's been with Swift for a year. I sat in the passenger seat for the last 3 months. I'm itchin' to drive. Got my Medical Card and my Florida CDL driving permit. I call up the recruiter at Swift and they inform me that they no longer accept Florida residents. They say they don't know why but I will find out. My options include a local school, 30 minute drive, went to see them and took all their info. $2700 is very good but is out of my range. Move in with a family member in New York and change my residency, license etc. But I will lose a $25,000 exemption on my house. Not willing to do that. Go with another company, but man, i love swift. We're comfortable. And if I go with another company then Swift is not only going to lose my husband but the team at we will make. Are there negotiating powers out there? Are there other solutions? Some other schools that will take payment after I start work? Thanks for any input.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Florida has always been a problem for freight. You know, it's the end of a cul-de-sac. But Lecanto is not all that far from their Ocala terminal. Is that your man's home base?

Your negotiating "power" is that your hubby has been with them for that year. Have you tried driving over to the Ocala terminal and talking with anyone?

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Thought about it. My husband suggested I contact a recruiter in Memphis. You think that's a good idea? That's where the school starts out and the last 2 weeks are in ocala.

I'm at the Memphis terminal! I went to the recruiting officer and got the straight poop for you.

There's no Swift Academy in Ocala. 😕

Swift will hire from northern Florida, including the Ocala area. 😃

You must do your own school to get your own full CDL (not just the permit). Swift will work with you for tuition reimbursement. I wonder what would happen if you offered to get to Memphis or Richmond VA for the Academy on your own? I know they pay for gas if you drive you school.

I spoke with Evan in the Memphis recruiting office. To get his direct phone number, email me at

I'll get back to you.

Tell Evan "Errol sent me" to close this loop. There's also a deal for spouses. Ask Evan about that, too.

This is surprising - especially since you're north of the I-4 line of death (since no one hires S of I-4 pretty much), AND because you are going to turn a truck with a PASSENGER - INTO A TEAM TRUCK (which they'll have to love - more miles means more $$ for Swift).

I was told by a couple of companies that if I wanted to "get on" in Broward County, Fl. - I'd have to do TEAM and bring a team-mate from this area with me.

Damn, I unsubscribed by accident. But I think I'm back. Something's in the works that I hope works out. I'll get back with the end of the story.

Congrats! You're very lucky, Errol is usually mean to people and dispenses bad advice.
