I drive dry van. Home time is what I want it to be. My company is big about working with you on HOW you want to run. I am currently home every weekend. Time varies. Anywhere between 24 and 48 hrs.

As far as backing, I am doing better than most for my time spent driving truck. Then again I have other experiences that help. I drove Cat 775B haul trucks during my first break in service, plus I was an aviation mechanic in the service. Lots of experience pushing aircraft around the airfield and into/out of hangars. Granted it was a 2 swivel point hookup and I was facing forwards.

Here are those pics. semi-truck trailer parked on ramps with wheel chocksnew <span class= CDL student standing by his cdl.com truck at truck driving school" title="new CDL student standing by his cdl.com truck at truck driving school">

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Dry Van:

A trailer or truck that that requires no special attention, such as refrigeration, that hauls regular palletted, boxed, or floor-loaded freight. The most common type of trailer in trucking.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

That is the only time I had to put my tandems on a tiny ramp. There are other things mostly. Fire hydrants, cement pillars, rail road tracks, piles of scrap paper, that kind of stuff usually.

Tandems:

Tandem Axles

A set of axles spaced close together, legally defined as more than 40 and less than 96 inches apart by the USDOT. Drivers tend to refer to the tandem axles on their trailer as just "tandems". You might hear a driver say, "I'm 400 pounds overweight on my tandems", referring to his trailer tandems, not his tractor tandems. Tractor tandems are generally just referred to as "drives" which is short for "drive axles".

Magick . . . Sorry my brain was kind of on overload last night, too much info but anywho. On the electronic logs: Is there a time delay on when they activate? I've been reading some turn on with a rotation of the wheels of the truck, some have a mile or so, etc. Say you park on site at a receiver but you're early for delivery & they're not open yet. When they do open, they assign you a door but wont be able to load you for another hr or so. Instead of starting your clock & waiting, burning your drive hrs, you back up to the dock & hop back in the bunk. Would there be a delay of when the log would start when you move the truck?

Electronic Logs:

Electronic Onboard Recorder

Electronic Logbook

A device which records the amount of time a vehicle has been driven. If the vehicle is not being driven, the operator will manually input whether or not he/she is on duty or not.

Each company sets up their QualComm with different tolerances. My company gives you 1/2 mile and 15mph. Exceed either one and you are placed on duty driving.

I regularly try to make it to a RCVR the night before my appointment. Then do my unload the next morning while I am off duty.

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.

I love being at HOW. They fit what I was looking for. They are a medium sized company. They only have 1 terminal. It is in Amherst, WI. It feels like a smaller company than it actually is. They are debt free. Safety and Maintenance are big priorities for them. Their slogan is: "Your Success Drives Us." They are big on working with individual drivers on home time. You run as hard as you want. They do have OTR and Teams, but most drivers are solo regional. I haven't heard a single peep about owning or leasing. From what I get, if you want to be an owner and have worked hard for them, they will sell you one of their trucks or take you down to the Freightliner dealer and have you order your truck. But take that with a grain of salt. It was truckers talking. I have only ever seen 1 truck that was owned by someone. It was one of their older mid roofs. He had it at the terminal getting maintenance done. The only place they have hourly positions is up in NY.

I guess I should just say I am enjoying where I am at. I was beginning to sound like a walking recruiting advertisement. Btw, did I mention my truck number, lol. Then again I have only been on my own for a month. I am definitely no authority on trucking.

Drive Safe and God Speed.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
