Oh, and Tractor Man....I got you by five years....sonny....
Yeah, I haven't watched nascar in some time..Guess I need to catch back up
I was once an avid fan, watching every race religiously. On the days I had things to do, I'd throw a tape in and record the race, to watch later. Terry Labonte was my guy for ages up till he retired.
The past few years though, I kinda got away from it. Something about it has changed. Too commercialized or something. Maybe it's just because the old school drivers have moved on, leaving the young guns. I don't know.
I still try to watch as many races as I can though. I'm still on the fence as to who I'm gonna root for, but Chase Elliot is lookin good, and I always liked his daddy.
Tractor........ seriously? Kyle?
I just threw up a little in my mouth....
Oh, and Tractor Man....I got you by five years....sonny....
Wow.....You and Errol both go back to the Stone Age!
Chase Elliot is lookin good, and I always liked his daddy.
Yes, Awesome Bill from Dawsonville, a GREAT Driver. There are several Young Guns that are going to be fun to watch over the next number of years. Chase of course, Kyle Larson, and the Kid from my Hometown Alex Bowman. He did a great job filling in for Dale Jr. this season. I think you will see him as a full time driver for Hendrick Motorsports next year. Sad to see Tony and Jeff retire, both of them were great for the sport. Another changing of the guard. I look forward to the next generation!
Kevin Harvick (although one of the best Drivers in the sport) makes me want to throw up. Maybe it is more Delana, his wife, than him. Still don't like him.
And Yes, Terry Labonte, ALWAYS liked that guy, Class Act.
Are Penske fans allowed here?
It is quite depressing what happened to both North Wilkesboro and Rockingham, that was about the time I started watching. I guess they thought North Carolina at the time was over saturated and they wanted to add the new tracks in different regions. It was a good plan in the short term but hurt them in the long term as the cars became more aero dependent and the racing at these bigger tracks became more spread out. I would personally like to see the Cup series go to smaller tracks like Iowa or Pikes Peak for that purpose but I don't see it happening.
Quite simply the corporations have removed most of everything from NASCAR that was ever fun to watch. Changes to the cars and the tracks ruined the rest. There's no fightin or cussin or wreckin or anything. It's just the same agenda every week for the drivers:
1) Make sure you look like all of the other drivers
2) Make sure you talk like all of the other drivers
3) Make sure you don't scratch up the sponsor's name on the side of the car
4) Don't say anything you wouldn't say to a puppy or your grandma
5) Make sure you're careful out there so we can get a good points finish. You don't want to be wreckin that car just to try to win a race or something dumb like that. This isn't the 80's anymore you know.
Half of the races are won by driving slow enough to get better fuel mileage, the rest are won by someone who wound up first after a pit stop because his tire changers were 1/10th of a second faster than the tire changers for the fastest cars on the track. Like who on Earth has ever gone to watch a race hoping the winner would get to victory lane because he had gotten better fuel mileage or because a tire changer changed a tire faster?
Junk.
Then the relentless focus on the points championship has taken a lot of the fun out of the individual races. Back in the day you wanted to win championships but you would much rather win prestigious races. Nowadays races like Daytona and the Brickyard and the Southern 500 are treated like just another points race.
And finally, could you possibly make the cars handle any better? Just literally put them on rails if you want them to drive perfectly. I love when a driver says in the post-race interview, "Man this track is tough to drive. The car was a real handful all day!"
Really? Was it that hard to drive? Doesn't seem so, considering I just watch 40 cars race 500 miles each without hardly a single incident whatsoever. That's 40 x 500 = 20,000 miles of racing with barely a single spin out or anything. Wow, I'm sure it was brutal even though 40 cars are now parked safely without a scratch on them. Pleeeeeeease.
Back in the day cars were all over the track. They weren't supposed to handle beautifully. They were supposed to handle like they were too big, too heavy, the center of gravity was too high, and the tires were too narrow because that was all true! Why? Because they were stock cars. That was the point. You send everyone out there in really fast but relatively poor handling cars knowing they would make a lot of mistakes which causes more lead changes, more passing, more wrecks, and overall more unpredictable racing. There was more passing in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade than there is in half the races these days.
And of course the tracks nowadays are as boring as they could be. You have a bunch of cookie-cutter tracks that are so painfully boring to watch it's awful - Chicago, Las Vegas, Kansas City, California, and several others - just super boring.
I was a hardcore fan from the time I was a little kid watching Earnhardt, the Allisons, Petty, Yarborough, and the rest of em racing on Wide World Of Sports. Nowadays I usually record the race so I can fast forward through it looking for anything interesting worth watching. Rarely do I have to stop for anything.
My greatest NASCAR moment? I was at the Daytona 500 Earnhardt won in '98 ........ I was driving a rig for US Xpress and I requested 4 days off in Daytona for the race. I slept in my tractor which I was given permission to park behind a gas station across the street from the track. I watched the race from the 10th row in turn four.
My second greatest? I was working a local job and told my boss that my Grandfather in Pittsburgh had died and I needed a couple of days off because we were going out of town for the funeral that weekend. What I actually did was drive my pickup truck from Buffalo to Brooklyn, Michigan for the June race. I slept in the pickup truck for three nights at the track. I don't actually have a grandfather in Pittsburgh.
Ah the good ol' days of NASCAR.....probably gone for good. If they put me in charge of NASCAR the only thing that would remain the same is cars that have V8 engines and 4 wheels. Other than that they need to scrap the entire thing and start from scratch.
