Welcome Thomas. The recent suspension is going to cause you as much grief as the old issues you have. Companies don't like to see any recent suspensions.
You're going to find companies that will give you a shot but it's going to be tough. You're going to have to do some digging. I'm not sure if any of the Paid CDL Training Programs will give you a shot or not. If not, you're going to have to pay to attend a Private Truck Driving School. Before you make any commitments to pay for a private school make sure you apply for a bunch of pre-hires. We have a lot of information on pre-hires and how they work:
Someone will give you a shot but it's not going to be easy. Go through our Truck Driver's Career Guide if you haven't already. It's loaded with tons and tons of awesome information.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.
We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.
The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.
During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

Thomas, read this part of Brett's reply very carefully. BEFORE you commit to school! Don't do it backwards! You need someone committed to hire you FIRST.

With the challenges on his record, I'd want two, or even three pre-hires , just in case some recruiter wasn't paying attention and missed something on the application that disqualifies him.
If that does happen, and money is spent on school, a CDL-A will allow him to drive CDL-B which might be a bit easier to get hired for. Dump trucks, garbage trucks, etc.
