I have been studying the South Carolina CDL manual for a little over a week now. I have taken the practice tests on here and score 80 and above. My question is how close are the questions to the ones on the permit test? How hard is the permit test? I am just wanting to make sure I pass it on Monday when I go take it.. Thanks

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Most of the questions are extremely similar. Every state throws in a curveball but if you actually learn the answers rather than memorizing them then the test is pretty much the High Road here.

I did the high road for a week before orientation and the entire bus ride to Prime. The easiest and shortest is tanker endorsement. I took that one first to boost my confidence. I was the first in my class to pass all four sections in one shot and know it was due to this site. Yay Brett!

Tips: Eliminate two of the answers. There are usually three to four answers. At least give yourself a 50/50 shot. Skip questions you don't know cause the answers might be in other questions later. Learn the PSI in how many minutes type of questions. They will definitely be on there.

And breathe. If you truly work this program, you WILL pass the test.

Good luck

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

if you actually learn the answers rather than memorizing them

See, that's the key. Remember, you're trying to learn what it takes to handle a rig safely. You're not just trying to pass a written test. The difference between knowing this stuff and not knowing it can potentially be life or death. If you were taking a cooking class I would say you could maybe flub your way through by memorizing a few quick answers. But this is about handling an 80,000 pound building on wheels. You need to learn the materials, not just memorize a few answers to a few questions.

So work your way through the High Road and trust me, you'll fly through the written exams like they're nothing. Not only that, but the repetition you get from the quizzes throughout the program will help you retain that knowledge for a very long time.

Congrats! I just took mine two weeks ago here in Illinois. I found the program here on truckingtruth to be extremely helpful! I'm not sure how every state does their permit testing, but if yours is anything like mine, I have one word of advice. The SKIP button is your friend! For example, General Knowledge is 30 questions and you are allowed to have 6 wrong and pass. As soon as you reach 24 correct, the system stops because you have passed that portion of the exam. Skipping a question does not mark against you. Of course those questions will come back to you at the end of the test should you NEED to answer them, but you may very well get your 24 required correct answers before your stumper gets back to you. (and having a moment to 'step away' from the question may provide better clarity in the event you SHOULD have to face it at the end. Good luck to you! You've got this!

All great advice! In Missouri, there are 50 multiple choice questions for the general. Definitely so those you aren't sure of - you might not even have to answer them if you get enough of the others correct. Also, watch the wording carefully...look for the word "except"...for those, you are looking for the wrong answer, unless they throw a curve ball like "all of them are correct". . Don't worry if they throw a question or two in there that you have never, EVER heard of...just skip it. If you have to guess, so like Rainy said and eliminate the two obvious wrong answers, then just use common sense. If you have studied the High Road, you'll do great! I give all the credit for passing all four on my first try to Brett, this site, and the High Road Training! And, like Brett said, retain the info...you're ultimately not trying to pass a test...you're learning lifesaving information that will always be with you as you drive your "building" safely down the highway! Best of luck to you and God Speed!

Yeah, they're right -- you aren't taking the test to take a test. It isn't testing how much memorization, but rather how well you've understood what you're supposed to know. I was nervous about mine as well; came across a couple of questions never covered in my class discussions but it was fine because of all three tests (air brakes, combination, and general), i only got 3 wrong. You study a lot, yes, but don't stress so much! Just understand the stuff and you'll be fine.

Yeah I got the part about learning and knowing the stuff not memorizing.. I am taking the test this coming Tuesday and I have to pass to keep my start date with Rhoel CDL school... I was just mainly want to pass it so I don't have to change my time.. I guess I will continue studying and taking the practice tests and see hope for the best... Thanks for all the replies..
