Cost Of Benefits

Hello all,

My search for the right company continues since the one company I was leaning towards, Prime, has incredibly high health insurance costs. $1,341.73 a month for family coverage is higher than anyone should pay for coverage. There appears to be a similar cost structure for the companies that have their benefits cost readily available for people to see. I had heard that trucking offered great and affordable insurance so maybe I am overlooking. I worry because I will be taking a sever pay decrease to enter trucking but apparently get hit with a near 400% increase in health insurance costs. This doesn't even include dental and vision.

So since we have members employed with a variety of companies I was wondering if it was possible for someone to post what the benefits cost for you particular company?

Thanks!

The charts of benefit costs are hard to come by. You can imagine that all companies will have very similar healthcare costs.

Now union companies (the older ones like USD and YRC) may have even "no cost" health coverage.

The cost of healthcare is not something worth shopping around truck companies for.

There is something wrong with that number. I would ask for some clarification. That would be about 2/3 of your take home pay as a rookie.

That number seems high to me... even though I am single, with no kids, I only pay about 40-50/wk for medical, dental, vision, life, etc., and I have the higher cost plans for each, and have extra life insurance above what the company provides at no cost....

I would ask them to explain why its so high... I apologize, but are you a company driver or l/o - o.o? I am guessing they are giving you the cost for l/o or o/o....

It looks like I may have been looking at Prime's corporate employee prices. Prime's Benefit Package

Either way, I would like to get a good sense of what benefits cost because that is a real factor to consider.

I just looked. They offer us two plans...and unlike many companies, prime offers not just driver and family...but both spouses without kids..and driver and kids without a spouse.

The price you saw is for the "high" option for the first year then drops to about $800/for family. The "low" option starts at $800 then after the first year drops to about $350 or so.

As a solo I got the low option for $65ish per pay. On my one year anniversary it dropped to $22 per week.

Even with the low option I have not paid anything for prescriptions as of yet. My monthly Rx is $150 and I don't have a copay. My antibiotics were $23/and I paid nothing.

Errol mentioned some of the union LTLs. As another point of reference for the OP, with Old Dominion (non-union) I pay just under $400 a month for my family of four. That includes the cost of dental and vision. Employees that are single pay very little, close to "free."

I totally understand why you would be considering health care costs during your quest to choose a company. Unless most truckload companies don't differ much, I would say that is certainly a criteria worth using.

LTL:

Less Than Truckload

Refers to carriers that make a lot of smaller pickups and deliveries for multiple customers as opposed to hauling one big load of freight for one customer. This type of hauling is normally done by companies with terminals scattered throughout the country where freight is sorted before being moved on to its destination.

LTL carriers include:

  • FedEx Freight
  • Con-way
  • YRC Freight
  • UPS
  • Old Dominion
  • Estes
  • Yellow-Roadway
  • ABF Freight
  • R+L Carrier

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
