I drive with zero air in the seat, save for lower lumbar support. I can't see the hood in a Cascadia, but can in a Volvo VNL.
Just curious, how do you make sure you have proper clearance in tight spots?
If you mean in front of me, I use the hood mirrors as points of reference. But I've also got some experience, so I have a feel for my space as well. If I have any inkling of doubt, I'll GOAL.

Good point on the hood mirrors!
Heh, I'm 5'8" and I drive with the seat fully raised, and pulled forward far enough that my stomach brushes the wheel when I take a deep breath.
Two reasons. First for better visibility around the truck. The passenger side blind spot is much smaller for me when I'm up and forward. Second for sunrise and sunset issues. The higher I am in the seat, the better use I get out of the sun visors.
Trans-Am
Problem I see is that you are training for stick. You could drive an automatic, of course, but would you want to? If you hate automatics, then you will be unhappy driving what your wife was trained to drive, if she got an automatic-only limitation on her license.
Is there a company that would hire just with the auto endorsement ?

Yeah, that's what I referred to as "belly resistance"!
