Thanks Parrothead66! I am definitely attracted to TMC, McElroy and tonight I think I am going to look into Maverick and Prime's flatbed division. I am definitely made for flatbed, cause I like, Old School love accomplishing things with my hands and I like working outdoors especially when it is in the country. The thing about flatbed that gets me so excited is the fact that you get to take things like equipment and be a part of building projects and see things that most people wouldn't unless they we're in that part of the industry.

I'd go with Britton Transport. They're a smaller flatbed company that runs 48 states and Canada. Canada is not forced though. Trucks are nice with APU. They hire new cdl grads.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

APU:

Auxiliary Power Unit

On tractor trailers, and APU is a small diesel engine that powers a heat and air conditioning unit while charging the truck's main batteries at the same time. This allows the driver to remain comfortable in the cab and have access to electric power without running the main truck engine.

Having an APU helps save money in fuel costs and saves wear and tear on the main engine, though they tend to be expensive to install and maintain. Therefore only a very small percentage of the trucks on the road today come equipped with an APU.

A quick check to Britton's website reveals an 18 month prior experience as a pre-qualifier for hire. Doesn't hurt to call though, because many times website information is dated and not current.

Good luck.

Ok thanks you all for that suggestion. I will look at it. It look really interesting. Smaller means they will be more dependent on me right??

Victor if you learn how to be a consistently top performing and safe driver, most any company will depend on you.

G-town thanks for the encouragement and advice. I must say you and Old School have been like my trucking guides as well as Brett Aquila and Errol V. And so on. I do like that I am getting a good start even before I get into a company and that I have a positive mind set. That is all that matters. Thanks again!!

C.T. I am just not sure anymore. I just looked at Melton and Maverick and I swear both of them seem to be enticing but my question is, is everything they are claiming that they are going to do and have, is it true and are their work environments friendly? I want to know your opinion cause I know you work for them. And those who know about Melton are they reliable and truthful when it comes down to their claims on their website?

TMC though C.T. is probably still highest on my list. But now maybe wavering since I see some huge pro's to working at Maverick and Melton. Let me know what you think. Like Old School says, it is based on my performance but I really do like the work out gym at Melton. Pay at Melton is awesome too. The only downside is that it isn't employee owned, is Maverick?

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Maverick is great man. Literally everything they said they'd do they've done. I got home today around noon and will be off for Christmas through monday. Didn't even ask but it's much appreciated. I can make as much money as I want or get home more. Only complaint I have is I got a 4 year old truck lol but I'm next in line for a new 1. Melton would probably be no different as well as tmc. You're in a tough spot, cause there's no bad move here.
