So I made the decision to begin my trucking journey quicker ... i was going to start in March but what better time than to start in the middle of winter to get pointers and advice by a trainer.

Anyways, can a newbie company driver ask for a kind of truck he wants. I am dedicated to driving for prime lightweight truck for reefer.I will catch flack for this maybe but I would like a automatic if that's even an option. Can you ask for this before your hired or are you handed the keys and basically said "here ya go! Time to go!" And it's a random truck

You're not gonna catch much flack for wanting an auto, I would prefer one myself. You can ask when you upgrade and they will prolly give you one if they have it. I am in a lightweight, pulling reefer and I wanted an auto, just because I'm basically lazy . 😃 I got a 2014 Prostar 10 speed manual, and I'm glad I did. My comfort level with the manual has gotten to be so much higher, and it's becoming more natural, like in a 4 wheeler.

But to answer your question, no you won't absolutely get what you ask for, unless it's available.

When I graduated from training and got my truck, they asked if I wanted an auto, 10 speed or 13 speed. Once I had selected which speed I wanted, which was a 10 by the way because that's what I trained on, then they looked through their inventory to see what trucks were available. Then they handed me the keys to a 2014 Prostar 10 speed. Mind you, this was with Celadon and I hated driving for them; those people gave me a headache. But, I think that's a common thread for companies that have more than one kind of truck to drive.

DAC:

Drive-A-Check Report

A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).

It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.

Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

I finish my 4 weeks of training with Knight and I was asked after my road test what kind of truck I wanted. I requested a Volvo automatic because LA traffic stinks. I was given a 2016 Volvo Automatic within a day, so I think most companies will try to honor your requests. I'm thinking of moving to Reefer and I was told they would try to give me the same truck.

I drive for prime and its possibility but not a guarantee. The newer trucks coming in are autos. LWs are usually easier to get so I'm guessing you won't have to wait. Auto? No guarantee, but its possible by the time you get through training. Focus on the tests and training first before you worry about the truck.

I THOUGHT I wanted an auto. Now I'm dreading the day I turn over stick :( lol
