Sometimes yes, sometimes no. There will be times when you're sitting for several hours or sometimes even a day or two waiting for your next load. But most of the time they will have your next load lined up before you even deliver the one you're on or within an hour of finishing your delivery.
There's an expression in trucking - "hurry up and wait" - which basically means hurry up and get where you're going so you can sit around and wait a while. That seems to happen a lot. They'll tell you to get somewhere in such a hurry that it seems lightning will strike you dead if you waste even a single minute. Then you get there and wind up sitting around doing nothing for six hours.
That's truckin. You just have to go with the flow.
