That is an interesting question. I know that all of the carriers I am looking at have training facilities in Illinois and you get you CDL before going out with a trainer. I would be curious to see the logistics behind stopping on the road to test. If it's anything like the class B procedure, you have to make an appointment well in advance and you can't be more than 15 minutes late. You also have to be empty if I remember correctly. In addition, they have reduced the number of DMV facilities at which you can take the road test. For instance, I Took my permit tests in Decatur but had to go to Springfield to take the pre trip and road test. Swift uses 160 Driver Academy and US Xpress uses Premier Driving Academy in IL.

When I was going through this process I was told that illinois has to certify the out of state schools. Usually the schools are within an hour of a sec. State office so you get an actual illinois permit and CDL.
Illinois changed everything and became a lot more strict after one of our secretary of States was caught selling cdl's to people not qualified for them. It resulted on at least one deadly crash that killed a whole family, if I remember right.

I'm asking for a friend who is thinking of going into trucking. I'm getting my CDL from a private school here in Illinois, but he will not. My question is that I know Illinois requires ALL testing to happen in Illinois. In other words, there is no such thing as simply transferring your out of state license to IL by simply paying the appropriate fee. I'm guessing the way it works is that, lets say you go with Prime. You'd get your MO license and then at some point you'd pass through IL with your trainer and take your pre-trip, skills and driving test at an Illinois facility?
Anybody in Illinois who has been through this?
Cheers!
