Try typing "per diem" in the search box at the top of the page. Not too long ago there was a thread where Rick S. layed it out real well.
Getting paid per diem means getting a portion of your salary paid to you without taxes taken out. It's technically classified as a meal and expense reimbursement.
Truck drivers and others who travel for a living get large tax deductions for meal expenses. The Government set up per diem pay as a way to reimburse some of the taxes you pay with each paycheck instead of making you wait until tax filing season.
Getting per diem pay means a driver will get a larger paycheck each week but a smaller tax return at tax time.
We have a ton of information on our wiki page on per diem pay
I can't find the most recent one (that easily), here's one that covers it pretty well though.
I'm new to Trucking and understand that I am eligible for money per day. My main question is so I get all my per diem back as a refund? Do I get any of it back? Can someone please explain how that works cause I have zero clue.
Not sure where to begin.
It's not about being "eligible for money per day". You are eligible for a TAX DEDUCTION - for every full day you are OTR. You don't "get it back as a refund" - you use it to REDUCE YOUR TAXABLE INCOME. If you have the standard withholding, and take all the possible DEDUCTIONS - you will lower the amount of TAXABLE INCOME used to determine how much money you have to give the IRS in taxes. If that number (your taxes owed) is less than what you HAD WITHHELD - the "difference" will be refunded.
Did that answer your question?
Rick
OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
