Rules vary slightly from state to state (even though they are supposed to be uniform by now) - but typically - you will need a DOT Med to get your permit.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Hello I'm starting school for my CDL and I was wondering do I have to do the DOT physical before my permit? My school offers free CDL permit but the class starts Feb.24 and my appointment for my DOT physical is on march 1st. Can I still attend the class?
