Andrew you have to pay for your sr 22 .... the minute you start paying for it your license will be reinstated but I can find out for you if you will be allowed to get a cdl and which company will be ok with your situation
Hi guys, I'm new to this forum so I'll probably have a lot of questions for all of you. I've been thinking about getting a CDL but I'm not sure if I'd even be allowed to do so. My license was suspended in 2009 for operating without insurance. I actually hydroplaned into a fender bender with the car in front of me. I was only driving maybe 25 - 30 mph but got a ticket for driving too fast for conditions anyway, even spent the night in county jail. It is an indefinite suspension that will be lifted as soon as I pay the reinstatement fee. Initially, I chose not to pay the fee to avoid the 3 year SR22 insurance requirement that follows this type of suspension in my home state of South Carolina. Since then, I've adjusted to life without having a driver's license and it really hasn't been a big deal. Well now, I intend to reinstate it the next few days and was wondering if getting a CDL was even feasible in my situation? If not, is there anything I can do to improve my hopes of doing so? Thanks to all who reply.

Andrew, your biggest problem is going to be that for the last eight years you have shown absolutely no interest in protecting your drivers license.
That is a big deal to trucking companies.
For a truck driver this is tantamount to success. We protect our licenses. That is our ticket to our career. No trucking company wants someone who shows disdain for what it takes to keep their license clean and in force. You have made a pretty big blunder if you want to get started at this, but hopefully you will get it straightened out. I wouldn't expect to be able to just jump right into getting my CDL immediately, but maybe you'll find out differently. Take it a little more seriously this next time around, you'll be glad you did.

Thanks guys. I initially didn't reinstate my license because I was told by my local DMV that I could just wait out the 3 years of the SR22 insurance requirement; that if I waited to reinstate then I wouldn't be required to pay the inflated rates. Did they misinform me? Also would my situation prevent me from getting a dock only position? I'm actually in the middle of a waiting for a background check for a casual dock worker position. The job posting had no requirement for a valid driver's license. The interview obviously went well but the subject never came up. In fact the application asked whether I was interested in getting a CDL to which I replied no. However, after finding out that a hefty pay increase accompanied my getting one, I'm certainly interested now. I hope this doesn't stop me from getting hired for the dock. Any thoughts?
