I have a question about leasing and I figure this may be the best place to put it. ( just a question no real motive). If a driver works for a company long enough and drives the same truck until that truck is ready to be sold is that the same truck you can lease or is a different truck entirely?

Ernie, I admit nothing.

Matt, when a truck is old enough to be sold then they would rather just get rid of it and put you on something newer. Companies like to keep their fleets within 3 years usually. When you lease you hand pick a truck from a list.

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Man, I was the only one here that didn't know, wasn't I? Ernie knew. I know Old School must have known. That's hilarious! I really had no idea. You guys did a great job of hiding that.

Hey, I don't blame anyone for taking a shot at something to see where it might lead. Almost all of the largest, most successful companies in this nation were started with one or two trucks. Ya never know, right? I've gone down many, many paths only to backtrack hoping to find a better route. It's all just part of the process of moving forward.

I was sworn to secrecy. He kept me in the dark at first... the only way I discovered it was that I was having a conversation with his wife, "Olga," and she let it slip! rofl-1.gif

After that he started asking me questions, but I don't think he ever took any of my advice. confused.gif

What you basically just said, according to the TT vocabulary:

Daniel never had to tell me. He let it slip one day about being able to do 65 mph in his truck. That's when I knew he was leasing with Prime, because company trucks can only do 62 mph.

I sent him a message about that, and he admitted to have come over to the lease side. I made several comments on here about that, no one ever picked up on it. So I just let it be.

Jeeze - even I KNEW.

There are actually a few regulars here that lease - for whatever their motivation(s). Out of courtesy to Brett & the board - they don't discuss it. None of them are "lighting the world on fire", but they have their reasons. One guy in particular, trains, and leaves the truck at SpringMo then flies home for hometime when he's done with each trainee. He pretty much does it for supplemental income, until his wife retires.

I have some good friends that are O/O's, and are doing OK (at least as far as they're concerned). They're in older, paid for units - they are also "homeless gypsies", and do it for the travel, lifestyle and flexibility, as much for the $$. But they also have minimal overhead, and can afford to "play tourist".

Most of us here, that ARE BUSINESSMAN, still don't see the risk:reward as being sufficient to warrant the overhead and responsibility. And there's somewhat LESS FLEXIBILITY in reality, because you owe your payments, even when you're sitting at home.

This just doesn't fit into my business plan. I want to DUMP my current business - and be an W2 EMPLOYEE - max out my SS, 401K & savings, and go sit on a mountainside in Costa Rica in 10 years. Leasing/owning doesn't compute for those long-term goals.

Hey hey, don't worry. For the duration of the lease I never came home with a negative check even on hometime weeks. Luckily Prime has a walk-away lease so when I got a local job I turned it in with no issues. I was extremely satisfied with the money and greatly blessed with a truck and APU that always worked and never broke down. Those repair bills are what sink people because truckers aren't the smartest people and they never have money saved for emergencies.

Worst that happened was when my student clipped another trailer in a parking lot while I was sleeping. That cost me 500$ out of my own pocket.

APU:

Auxiliary Power Unit

On tractor trailers, and APU is a small diesel engine that powers a heat and air conditioning unit while charging the truck's main batteries at the same time. This allows the driver to remain comfortable in the cab and have access to electric power without running the main truck engine.

Having an APU helps save money in fuel costs and saves wear and tear on the main engine, though they tend to be expensive to install and maintain. Therefore only a very small percentage of the trucks on the road today come equipped with an APU.
