I found an article today on this subject. It appears there are at least some making money at it, but the average is not much higher than I have seen quoted for company drivers. Link may be slow to load.

Owner Operator article

The article you linked is from 2008,so 10 years.I wonder how it's changed since then,if at all?

Owner Operator:

An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.

I knew it was old, didn't know how old. I think fuel may have gone down a bit.

Real question is, what were company drivers making 10 years ago. If it was close to those figures, then to me it still wouldn't make sense to have all the extra stress of being an O/O.

I also found this. It is more current. While the article is about the difference between having a third party dispatcher vs not, it does show income averages, though it doesn't say if that is gross or net. I hope net, since some are under 40K

Dispatcher:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Even more concerning that 11% (averaged) don't know what their income is.

Maybe they started mid-year...or they're going with the "ignorance is bliss" and "hope for the best" business modelconfused.gifrofl-2.gif
